Debit Card Information

What is a debit card?

A debit card looks like a credit card but works in a very different way. You can withdraw money or use the debit card to pay for purchases, but you cannot withdraw or spend more than the amount that has been loaded (deposited) on the card. “Debit” means “subtract” – and that is exactly how it works. When you spend or withdraw money using a debit card, your purchase or cash withdrawal is immediately subtracted from your card’s balance, along with any fees that apply. If your card balance is not high enough to cover what you are trying to spend or withdraw, the transaction will be refused. It may be helpful to think of a debit card as plastic cash. A debit card is NOT a credit card.

What is the KPC’s debit card called?

We call it the NOW card. It is Visa™ branded, so it can be used wherever the Visa™ trademark is displayed.

How does the KPC NOW card work?

When a payment is applied to any of your support case(s), the KPC has the money loaded electronically onto your NOW card. Normally your card will be credited with the money (“loaded”) a few days after KPC applies the payment to your support case(s). After the money has been loaded onto your card you will be able to withdraw or spend it. We encourage you to check your card balance before you make a withdrawal or purchase to be sure the most recent support payment has been loaded or that you haven’t forgotten about an earlier withdrawal or purchase.

How can I check my NOW card balance?

There are several ways to check how much money is left on your NOW card:

Call the toll free Debit Card Customer Service number printed on the back of your NOW card (1-866-865-1226) and use the automated voice menu. You will need your NOW card Access Code. There is no fee for this service, and it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Go online at www.ucard.chase.com and look at your card account. You will need your NOW card Access Code. There is no fee for this service, and it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You may also check your balance at an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) for a fee of $0.95 for each inquiry. Swiping your card at an ATM may be convenient, but can also be costly.

Here are some tips for keeping track of your card balance:

  • Write down every transaction on an Account Register. Click the FORMS tab on the left side of this page to find a blank Account Register that you can print and use.
  • Each time new money is loaded on your card fill in the date and a short description on your register - then add the amount to your card balance.
  • Each time you make a purchase, cash withdrawal or have a fee transaction (such as swiping your card at an ATM to check your balance) fill in the date and a short description on your register - then subtract the amount (including any cash back) to see your new balance.
  • Check your register balance regularly by looking at your NOW account online or by calling the toll free number printed on the back of your NOW card. Update account register as needed.
  • If you have Internet access checking your account balance online is easy and free.

For some transactions, merchants are allowed to use a “pre-authorized hold” to protect themselves from fraud or theft. The most common ones are for pay-at-the-pump gasoline purchases or hotel reservations. A pre-authorized hold is temporary, but it can cause a later transaction to be denied if you have a relatively low balance on your NOW card.

Are there fees?

If you use the NOW card carefully, you can avoid paying any fees. But there are fees for many services, so please check the fee schedule to see which ones may affect you. To view the fee schedule and see answers to Frequently Asked Questions, please click here. The fee schedule is at the end of the FAQ.

What if I move or my name changes?

Please contact the KPC right away with new information if you move or your name changes. This will ensure that replacement NOW cards and important mailed notices about the NOW card or the KPC will always reach you. Click here if you need to call us now.

What if my NOW card is lost or stolen?

Call Debit Card Customer Service immediately at 1-866-865-1226 to report the missing card, so no new activity will be allowed on that card. Please tell the Debit Card Customer Service representative exactly when the card was lost or stolen, so the representative can look for any card activity that came later. Your card balance is protected under federal laws, but you can help us prevent fraud. Please report a missing card right away to expedite the delivery of a replacement NOW.

How and when do I contact Debit Card Customer Service? How do I get information about my NOW card account?

Debit Card Customer Service is separate from the regular KPC customer service unit—they even have different hours of operation. Debit Card Customer Service only handles questions about an existing NOW card and the transactions made using that card. They cannot answer questions about your support case or payments that have not been loaded onto the NOW card yet.

You may call Debit Card Customer Service toll free at 1-866-865-1226 – you will need your NOW card Access Code. The automatic voice menu (IVR) can provide most of the information you need about your NOW card account, but representatives are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays to assist with questions concerning:

  • Report a lost or stolen NOW card
  • Check your NOW card balance before you make a purchase or withdrawal
  • Check your last 5 card transactions (purchases, withdrawals, or fees)
  • Check your last 5 card deposits
  • Change your NOW card PIN
  • Get help if you have problems using your NOW card
  • Ask questions about your NOW card account

You may also check your NOW card account or contact Debit Card Customer Service using the website www.ucard.chase.com. You will need your NOW card Access Code to access these options:

  • Look at your NOW card account information
  • Sign up for Deposit Notification Alerts
  • Send and receive secure e-mail with Debit Card Customer Service
  • Check your NOW card balance before you make a purchase or withdrawal
  • Look at your NOW card transaction history – all recent activity or the whole history
